Oily skin and how to not make it worse.

Oily skin is a big concern for a lot of young people, mainly teenagers, because as we grow older our skin tends to get dryer. That of course doesn’t mean that some older people don’t suffer from it.

One thing that I can tell you about oily skin is that if you don’t take care of it the right way it can get a lot worse really fast.

The first thing you want to do if you have oily skin is to actually cleanse it two times a day in the morning and in the evening, if you work out right after the work-out too. The best cleansers to use are the oil-free ones.

Some products that are been promoted as mattifying have really high concentration of alcohol, so if you see one of these-ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, alcohol denat, and methanol really high on the ingredient list of a product you are using, just never put that on your face again. The immediate results that it gives is satisfying, but in my experience after some time it makes your skin oilier, for me that happens within a few hours. The other effect that it has is that it dries out your skin, which can contribute to wrinkles and premature aging. Go ahead look through your products and stop using the ones with high concentration of alcohol.

Should you hydrate?

Yes! You should! Keep in mind that if you don’t give the skin what it needs, it will probably make it itself and by that I mean that it will start to produce even more oils. With oily skin you should stay away from thick creams during the day, keep them for your nighttime routines, in case you need extra hydration. Should you exfoliate?

Another big yes! I encourage you to use salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid and other chemical exfoliants, but to stay away from facial scrubs.

When using chemical exfoliants start slow use low percentages, so you can see how your skin reacts to it then if everything is fine, and you don’t see any irritation go for the products with higher concentration. Use them mainly at night and during the day you must put SPF on and that is a very important step because exfoliation can make your skin sensitive and there is a high chance that the sun will do even more damage.

Stay away from scrubs, because they can damage your skin by making tiny cuts in it and that is not what you want for the long run.
